Religion and Politics make for Fireworks!

Nathan Newman at TPMCafe posts about the liberal reaction in the blogosphere to a recent speech made by Barack Obama on the failure of progressives to connect with many religious voters. If you read the comment section and look at the extent of the ratings, you can see the fireworks. It’s definitely a touchy issue among Progressives. I think it’s up to Religious leftists/progressives to show that we can help make things happen to establish more voice for faith-based-activism.

Hi dlw
I have a *religious* objection to public prayer. I think prayer is supposed to be an intimate communion between God and me, or God and whatever brothers/sisters in Christ I happen to be worshipping with. But it seems to me that the Christian rightwing that supports prayer in school wants public prayer as a political victory against the secular state, or they actually want the state to actively promote Christianity. Now they could avoid using governmental power to promote Christianity by allowing a bland prayer to a generic deity, but I don’t want to participate in a prayer to a different God from *my* Lord, no more than I’d have wanted to eat food sacrificed to the roman gods in Paul’s time.
That’s not to say that Obama doesn’t bring up an important point for leftists to consider, but I didn’t think the progressive response was all that out of line.

Well, I don’t have a problem with such prayer as I am sure it gets to the right God, just as I wouldn’t have had a problem eating food s’posedly sacrificed to gods in Paul’s time.
