A couple of weeks ago we had Yale theologian Miroslav Volf speak at my seminary on his new book “The End of Memory“.

His book was written recently and is in part a reaction to how the US’s memory of 9-11 was not tended well and led us to be manipulated into the unjust regime change of Iraq.

We are now dialoguing some about his message at a discussion board for my systematic theology class.  One of my fellow sem-students, Marvena Love, wrote the above title sentence in her description of Volf’s book.  Here’s the rest…

“The powerful messages Volf gives for the value of placing past hurt, pain, and mistreatment in its proper perspective and accepting the truth that all come before the Savior in shame and sin, and are therefore only able to judge others and their wrongs in light of our own wrongs, is a dynamic message.  This is valuable and powerful insight into how we fogive others because as God fearing, sinful beings ourselves, we have no other choice.  Volf gives such powerful, beautiful insight into his own life of imprisonment and his journey to forgiving “rightly”.  He is a phenomenal speaker and presenter whose works I will enjoy for years to come.  It was such a pleasure to meet him in person.  The church must be a place where the ability to remember and forgive is taught and practiced; it must be the master example of forgiving and forgetting, and shouting out the truth of Jesus Christ.”

I, ever the arrogant US American, expressed over at Orange Ukraine how I’d like to see their President publicly admit that he has seriously failed the ideals of the Orange Revolution as president and maybe step down so someone not psychologically scarred by being poisoned but espousing similar ideals could rule.

I was then pleasantly surprised to learn from my Ukrainian friends, IIU and Elmer, that despite the ups-and-downs of the past two and some years that they do affirm the changes that their president has affected in their country’s political culture.  I was pleasantly surprised because it helped me to reframe how I saw their country and how I shd pray for their country.  I was basically seeing Yusch thru the lense I tend to see Bush with and I see now that that is not at all a good comparison.  I also am further impressed by the forgiving attitudes of the Ukrainian people, as they endure what is definitely a rather serious political crisis.

Veronika posts an Estonian reporter/blogger’s account of how a protest against the removal of a Russian Monument in Estonia escalated into seriously destrucive mob-violence.

All it takes is for those who are struck to strike back twice as hard and then pretty soon, radically destructive violence will ensue.

This is very well written.

It insists the Ukrainians must resolve their political problems but does insist that the way forward must be through new elections.

I hope and pray that the EU and US will hear and get behind such.

TPM is keeping vigil for some startling news being released down the pipeline late on Friday, when most folks aren’t paying diddly-squat attention to the news.

So far, it seems that the BushAdmin were considering the replacement of 12 federal attorneys, with the four left off being in swing-states.  It isn’t a smoking gun, but it’s smoke that could lead to further public inquiry and uncovering of wrongdoing.
