You never leave

You never leave home, ultimately. That’s been a real theme in my waking and dreaming life. We’re connected by e-mail and by this blog network. I can guarantee I would not be communicating with people as much if not for electronic media. You don’t want handwritten letters from me!
What was I getting at? Oh. I got my first whiff of office politics last night. Yeah! I knew it wouldn’t be all sunshine and light, so it’s like I never left. The players are different, the problems are different, but in the end, it’s still a newspaper.
I’m way too new to be engaging in the cynicism I got a glimpse of, but it’s interesting to sit back and watch. And I often have to bite my tongue when someone says something that I know would be just like that back home. Because I’m too new, and people don’t want to hear that. I’m trying to be a good girl, trying not to be too loud, too opinionated, yet. YET.

Another thing that’s just like home: the office temperature. One of my coworkers wears a hat and sweater. I felt a bit chilly my second night. I’m thinking all those sweaters I never thought I’d wear again are going to come in pretty handy.
By the way, I think I might’ve been mistaken about the dress code. I’m going to ask a couple of people, but it looks like jeans are OK! Hurray. I think I’m going to finish out the week wearing dress clothes, but after I confirm that jeans are OK all the time, those dress pants are in the closet for good!
Another plus: people in my department seem to be friendly and helpful. Had long, rambling conversations with several. Many of them cat lovers.
