Another mystery I didn’t want solved has been solved. The shopping cart guy is the same guy who lives next to me. Because the shopping cart has returned, is under the stairs again, and this time full of junk, but minus the death stench.
So I’m pulling into the complex, and I make a friendly wave to the guy, since he is my next-door neighbor. Big mistake. He hits me up for money.
I don’t know what I should have done, but I didn’t give him any. Still trying to figure out how he can afford to live in this complex if he hits up his neighbors for change and stores a shopping cart under the stairs. But hey, who am I to quibble?

The State is probably paying his rent. That would be my guess, anyway, unless he’s on disability or receiving some kind of veteran’s pension. Either way, he’s on welfare. I don’t know if you could report him as a panhandler or not, since he could just say he was asking to “borrow” money. But I’d definitely talk about him to my landlord, especially the fact that he had something dead in that shopping cart.
