Sigh of relief

Everything is officially unpacked. Of course, I had to repack maybe three boxes of things that I still want, but don’t have practical function, such as pictures I have no intention of organizing.
I’m very happy that my house is all picked up and neat, temporarily. There’s a chaotic region in the area of my computer desk, but the trouble with that, is there’s really not enough storage. I even have a box in my closet filled with things that belong on my computer desk. And it’s still a mess!
Now I can breathe easier, knowing I’m not shirking any work. But today, I think I’m going to go exploring the city.

I have a dishwasher, so I don’t have to worry about dishes that much. I did laundry last night, and all my laundry is put away! That itself is very impressive. Now I can play computer games with relatively little guilt.
I made tofu curry last night, and while I initially thought that the tofu was a bit too soft, it eventually changed into something that kind of resembled chicken. Very tasty.

And, in a final note of irony: I won a turkey yesterday. My complex had an early bird drawing and gave out turkeys. You pay your rent ahead of time, or on time, and you’re entered in a raffle every month.
At first, I was excited. I won a turkey. Surely I can have a turkey just this once.
But there is only me. And I already bought fake turkey. I wondered if I could give the turkey to someone at work, but I won’t be there till Wednesday, and most people would already have their turkeys.
Then I thought about saving it for someone to have for Christmas, or wondered if I could donate it to a homeless shelter, and then I was like, oh screw it.
So I went to go claim my turkey, but said I hoped they could give it to someone else in the complex who needed it more. Simple as that. I won a turkey and I probably made some family’s day. And I don’t have to break the no-meat rule, or worry what to do with the leftovers from a 12-pound turkey.

  1. What do you call a fake turkey? A Furkey? I’ve never seen one in the grocery store before.

  2. By the way, I forgot you’re a vegetarian. Sorry about that brutal meat-eating post I wrote earlier today. Sometimes I forget that some people might be offended by images of small animals being summarily dispatched and, later, consumed.

Congrats on winning the turkey, too. Too bad it was probably treated poorly before it was killed, shirnkwrapped, and frozen. Farm-raised turkeys have the worst lives imaginable. My Dad and Grandpa often killed our own wild holiday birds out in the woods, so even though hunting is not pretty, at least we knew the bird we were eating had a happy life prior to its death.

As to what fake turkey is called, it depends. I actually went shopping for some. You can buy tofurky, which is made out of tofu. You can buy it with an entire vege meal, including fake turkey giblet gravy and stuffing. I was going to buy tofurky, but then I found a loaf of vege meat that was probably more what I’m used to.
My family has sometimes bought something called holiday loaf, which really bears no resemblance, physically or in taste, to turkey, but is very good. It’s textured soy in big chunks, put together in a loaf.
What I bought appears to be a lot more finely grained. I’m not sure what to expect.
You can also buy tofu pups, which are hot dogs. I prefer my things to be labeled less cutesy things, like meatless sausage, or vegetarian sausage links. No tofurky for me. :)

  4. Well, we’re making the real thing today. Should be getting it in the oven in the next hour. I’ve already made my 2 pumpkin pies and cranberry sauce, and shredded bread by hand for stuffing. Already hungry for the big meal, and we’ve got several hours to go yet. Elliot cut his first tooth yesterday, so he’s almost ready for turkey, but not quite :)
    Have a lovely day, Melissa!
