A snap of home

Apparently, I’m beginning to get a reputation for letting my pictures fester undeveloped. A roll of pictures I’d taken in October had been starting to produce guilt waves, and my roommate took it out of my hands. I’d have happily let it go longer, but she got them developed for me anyway. (As an aside, wouldn’t recommend getting picture CDs at EWM. Their interface is terrible and invasive.)

It’s October still, in Niles. There’s no snow on the ground yet, and the temperature is about the same, I’d guess, as it is in Fresno now.

The ones I’m sharing are from moving day in a lighter moment.

My brother, Jon, laughs. He and my stepbrother Tommy decided they were going to go on strike from loading the truck if they didn’t get a smoking break, though Tommy doesn’t smoke, at least not that we know of. Still, they’re taking some well-deserved time off.

Heather also graciously agreed to help me pack and clean, on her birthday, no less. Now my roommate, she says, what else was I going to do? Somehow, I feel a bit guilty because I haven’t helped her unpack much.

Saving the best for last. Hopefully, my dad isn’t too mad at me. But you know Dad, when you drop trou for a photo, (and this is not an isolated incident folks; we have many, many instances of my father baring all, and we’re just lucky that this one, there’s still underwear involved) you have ass in the photo. Simple as that.

I title this one:
I came

Note my brother’s warding gesture. We don’t need to see that. Luckily, with enough exposure to Wiese ass, you become somewhat immune to the full force.

And this one is:
I conquered

Notice the look on his face. He’s very proud of himself. But he doesn’t do parties. Or maybe he does.

  1. “But he doesn’t do parties. Or maybe he does.”

My experience is, our parents have a whole other life we know nothing about, and probably are better off remaining ignorant of! Great pictures.

My life is a smoking break, though I don’t always (or very often) smoke.

  2. These are great, Melissa. I like the commentary best. Cute picture of Heather. The picture of father dearest however . . . well, it was nice too.

  3. You know, you could set up an entire blog of butt shots of your dad. I bet it would become popular real fast :)

I was going to say I should be careful what I say, since my dad reads this blog, but hell, I just put a picture of my dad’s ass on the internet. That being said, I know a fair amount about my father’s younger days, and probably not nearly all of it. And some of my goings on remain a mystery to him, which is the way it should be. We’re just as much friends as father/daughter, but some things should remain opaque to us both.

And to start a blog of butt shots, I’d have to get the cooperation of my father, who is in possession of some of these photos, but perhaps not all of them. His youngest sister probably has some as well. In fact, his youngest sister might be doing the same thing in one of them.

And Dad, I love you. :)

  5. Mel,
I have always admired your photographic skills. However if I were you, I would have left out #3, & had something more flattering to say for #4. GRIN!!!!!

  6. This may show up as a link & not a picture, but this would be Melissa learning to count. At times she couldn’t seem to get past 1 !!!!!

  7. Heather

That’s a fine pic of Melissa learning to count. In fact, I seem to see her counting to one all the time. I wonder if that means anything…

  8. Mel B

Dad, I was going to say this means war, but a) I don’t think I have any other incriminating pictures here and b) I appreciate your restraint. There are far worse pictures you could’ve retaliated with. :)

  9. Yeah,
Notice this picture is croppped. There seems to be a bit of someone’s shoulder in the picture to your left???

  10. Mel B

    You win. For now.

  11. so who’s on the left?? :)

  12. Mel B

I don’t know, and don’t want to know. I have my suspicions, but I’m not going to ask. And with any luck, my dad won’t let us know, either.

  13. Lord Aryzona (aka The JW aka Aryz aka Johnny Ghostrider)

those pictures were hilarious, and unflattering for the unshaven feller in the brown coat.

    good times

  14. Mel B

The unshaven feller in them there pics looked just fine, so you be quiet. Did you see Dad’s retaliation, Aryz?

I had tons of undeveloped rolls of film — I used to be really bad about taking it in. Then I was afraid to take it in cuz I had split up with my ex-husband and was in a new relationship. What if the pictures were from before my divorce? So, a few rolls at a time, my mom got them developed for me — none turned out to be that scary. Last week we were cleaning out the garage in our “new” house — we’ve lived here a year now; at least one of us should be able to park in the garage — and I came across a bag with the few remaining undeveloped rolls. Into the trash they went. I’ve had my digital camera for two years now — I have no desire to mess with film anymore. Now I can take all the pictures I want for “free” and send them around the world within minutes of taking them.
It must have been nice for you though, to get to see those images from before you moved out here. Like an unexpected visit.

  16. Mel B

Wow, I can imagine that was kind of scary. I don’t have film that old, but I lost a roll of film from a trip to New Orleans, and since I never found it when I moved, I’m assuming I’ll never find it now.
My niece found a roll of film in my car once which I’d hoped was the New Orleans film, but turned out to be a roll from my best friend’s wedding from the year before. (I shot my best friend’s wedding, and in my defense, she had plenty of pictures from me, without the missing roll.)
I’ve also been known to find that I’ve been taking cat pictures a lot, and then leave them undeveloped for a while. It just depends. Sometimes it used to be a question of money. I’d shoot a lot of pictures, and then I didn’t want to develop them because that cost more money.

I am going to buy a nice digital camera in the next couple of months, because I’m so bad with film. I don’t like to have to store the physical prints, either.

It was nice to see pictures of before I left. It was like seeing a bit of home. I also had my dad send me pictures of the first snow, and of Christmas stuff.

  17. [...] This time last year, I was finishing packing, cleaning out my old life in Michigan. Without a Map’s Heather was kind enough to help me finish up, on her birthday. Today is Heather’s birthday. Let us all wish her a happy birthday. [...]
