I wrote a short short story years ago, long before my fascination with shopping carts took hold.
I drove by
I drove by, and my headlights silhouetted something, large, something moving, on the side of the road. Concerned, I slowed down, thinking some animal had been injured.
An animal of a different kind, perhaps. I stopped in the curve the road, dangerous, I know, and saw the wheels of a shopping cart, turning futilely turning like the feet of some stranded insect on its back.
I got out and approached the beast. Gently, as if rolling over a slumbering cat, I turned it right side up. No reason for a shopping cart to die that way.

Were you reading kafka’s Metamorphosis during this time of your life by any chance?
I don’t think so. It could be an unconscious influence but it would be years removed.
I think more likely it was simply because I saw a cart on the side of the road one night.
