Does anyone else see the irony in barely being able to hear the person trying to help you change your phone service to another address?

  1. Oooooo! An irony thread!

First, yes, I see the irony quite well.

I have another one for you (and I swear it’s true!): This is odd but it’s also a serviceman tale but when I had my new cable set up, the guy came in and did all the wiring. Then he turned on the TV and looked at the picture.

He said, “It seems clear. How’s the color?”

I said, “It’s not GREAT, but that could be my TV.” (My TV is pretty old.)

He said, “Well, do you think it’s your TV? Does the color look different than it did before?”

I said, “I don’t know. What do you think?”

He said, “I’m not sure. I’m nearly color blind.”

  2. You definately have a good point! One of my clients is in the legal department of SBC and I can NEVER hear him! We result to e-mailing one another.

I had to ask her to speak up. At first, I thought it was a very bad recording from across the universe. It got better, to the point that it was just very staticky, as opposed to inaudible.

And that’s funny about the cable guy.

Speaking of irony, am I the only one who sometimes can’t distinguish coincidence with irony? I seem to get corrected on that a lot.

  5. I’m not sure there is a big difference between coincidence and irony. After all, if I win the lottery and then die in a plain crash while going to receive my award, that is both ironic and a coincidence. Isn’t it?

You’ve got me humming that Alanis Morissette song, “Ironic,” now. I think the radio played that song ten times an hour back in ‘96. I’d often refer to it when teaching my students about irony.

Shel and I had a coworker whose pet peeve was the misuse of irony.
But I am more sensitive to it because of that, and I think I use it correctly, most of the time.
But not so sure that Alanis Morissette always did. :)

  7. Great. Now I have Alanis in MY head too!!! Thanks a lot guys.

“It’s like raaaainnn on your wedding day….”

  8. You’ve gotta admit, her “Jagged Little Pill” CD is probably the quintessential album of the mid-nineties. Practically every song on it was great. Listening to it brings back everything about my time in college. Great album.

Oddly, I wasn’t all that into Alanis when that CD first came out. My brother was a bigger fan. I eventually identified with it as an album for anger in an angry time in my life. But when hasn’t there been an angry time in my life?
But yeah, Alanis does bring back lots of memories.

    Other angry albums/songs for me:
    The Offspring’s Smash. Specifically, Self-Esteem.

Nine Inch Nails… well, pretty much anything. But especially most of Pretty Hate Machine. Something I Can Never Have. That’s What I Get. Sin.

Ah… Now putting in some nin right now.
