Don’t make the cat angry

Don’t make the cat angry. You won’t like him when he’s angry.
Oh, yeah, but what can he do?
Heather’s chief act of mischief is to pick up my cats. None of them like to be held, so that’s torture enough. But sometimes the holding gets more fun.

A mildly irritated Merlin.

An extremely irritated Merlin. After this shot, he struggled his way out and jumped down ungracefully, and Heather had to apologize.

Wow! He looks like a big Sophie (my oldest girl)! With the different photographs, I can tell he has the same colored eyes and markings.
You should share some pics if you can. There’s nothing I love more than cat pics. Trust me. Got flack once when someone noticed that I had no human pictures in my house. I immediately dug out some human pictures to compensate. But there was still an abnormal amount of cat pics.
For whatever reason, though, the cat picture taking has calmed down over the last year or two. Mostly because Merlin isn’t growing anymore, except for out (I took a whole slew when he was a baby). I did the same for Ziggy.
And how many cats do you have, Brandi?
I would love to post some pictures of the girls, but I do not have a digital camera, yet.
Sophie is my oldest and is turning six this month! She has been a God send to me. I found her when she was about four weeks old and had to mommy her. She is like my child! Cleo is my youngest and she turned one in December. I found her at the shelter and when I opened the cage door, she hopped onto me and started to kiss me! Sometimes I think she thinks she is a dog. Always following me or Sophie, playing fetch, and what have you.
I was/am a cat picture freak and have only pictures of the girls around the house. I agree, as they are growing it is fun to take pictures because they were so small as youngsters. It is hard to believe they were ever so tiny!
And Brandi, your cats are pretty, as your Christmas picture attests. They made it onto our “fridge o’ friends”
Speaking of cats, I have recently gotten over my “cat fear.” I had lots of cats as a kid, but as an adult, cats I ran into tended to hate me. There was one that continually jumped on my head. There was another that acted all nice and climbed into my lap…only to hiss at me and bare its teeth and claws. (I had nightmares after experiencing that episode a few times.)
So I have recently avoided cats. But over the last month, a certain cat by the name of Casper who belongs to a friend of mine has changed my mind. Casper is big, fat and the softest cat I’ve ever petted. Like rabbit fur. He’s part Siamese and has bright blue but crossed eyes. Very affectionate and very audible with the purring. He’s the cat who will nudge you and try to get his head under your hand if you happen to stop petting him. He gives kisses which kinda freaked me out at first, but now I’ve learned to accept it. But best of all, he plays fetch. I know others have cats that play fetch but I have never seen one do this or taken part in the game. I could kill hours playing fetch with Casper and he never tires of it.
So I’m back on the cat wagon, so to speak. It’s been awhile.
Dawn — Thank you for the compliments on Sophie and Cleo! In my opinion, they are pretty girls! I, too, have Baby E on my fridge, along with pictures of the girls and my cousin’s daughter. It make the bland-looking fridge look festive and fun!
Shel — Maybe, just maybe, it is time for you to get a little kitty!
Now wait a minute there Brandi! I’m just getting used to being AROUND cats again without flinching every time one comes near.
It might be a little soon for me to get a kitty.
if you get my mom on the topic of cats, she’ll tell you how she found an enormous black cat sitting, not laying, on her infant son (my brother). The cat smelled the milk on his breath and was somehow threatening him. The threat was ambiguous–and as far as I know he did no harm Scott–but that at least for the young me was enough: the image of a giant black cat sitting on my infant brother has stayed with me.
I’ve traveled a long way with the help of Bruce A. Catburn.
Love the allusion to the incredible hulk, M. we watched the pilot movie not that long ago and I was impressed…
The pilot to the series? I, ah, bought that, and was duly impressed. Started recording it off sci-fi. Part of it is guilty pleasure, part of it pleasant surprise.
What inspired you to pick it up?
Brandi, you cats sound lovely. I always like the stories that go with rescued cats. I had no intention of getting another cat when Merlin used magic and meowed at me so pitifully that I knew he needed to go home.
And Shel, you know you want a cat. You know you do.
I have two cats that have been known to play fetch. One still does. Stinky used to play fetch with rubber bands when she was much much younger. She still occasionally plays with them, but she hasn’t played fetch in at least 10 years.
Merlin still plays fetch. I can throw stuff up and down stairs for him now. Which is a great deal of fun until he has to quit because he’s exercised out.
But if there’s no stairs involved, I could probably play fetch with him for an hour, or until I got bored (more likely.) The only problem is that cats get a bit arrogant about playing fetch. When they first start, they’ll bring you the item right within reach. After a few throws, they get lazy and leave it further and further away. Pretty soon you’re the one playing fetch. Actually pretty clever on Merlin’s part, but that’s usually the point I won’t play any more.
Sometimes if I’m not being attentive enough, he’ll meow loudly. When that fails, he’ll lie down patiently by me, often with the ball between his front paws.
For the record, Bruce isn’t a fan of milk, particularly not human milk. (And, no, I did not try to breastfeed my cat. I only offered him some leftover pumped milk). Bruce prefers fruit to milk anyday–loves watermelon and avocado especially. He used to play fetch, but alas, we’ve been too preoccupied to try it lately.
Until I got Cleo, Sophie would play fetch with leftover rings from milk cartons. She would play with us, play by herself, put them in the litterbox, her food and water bowls, and sometimes on the pillow next to my face when I would be sound asleep. Since bringing Cleo home, however, Sophie has abandoned her little toys and now plays every waking moment with her little friend. When Cleo plays with the toys, Sophie moniters and to hide the toys!
I never would of thought about giving breastmilk to a cat. Dawn, you do not cook with it, do you?
I’m amused that you tried to give your cat leftover milk, Dawn. And Bruce loves avocado? That’s very funny. Stinky’s big thing is refried beans. I think Merlin has finally gotten to the stage where he doesn’t think he wants to try everything any more. But he’s still a pig. And both boys, who used to be big cheese fans, often can take it or leave it now.
Milk rings! Stinky was also a big fan of milk rings. Merlin plays with them now. The best cat toys are the ones that are free. His favorite toy is a piece of ribbon I got on a gift. He carries it everywhere. I often find it deposited in bed (while I’m sleeping.)
And Brandi, that’s very sweet that your cats get along so well, and have each other. My boys fight, but it’s mostly friendly. Except for when I hear squeals.
Dawn, that’s too funny.
I look forward to soon posting a bit on the rooftop felines around my place.
I envy all you people with pets. I love animals, and most like me. It’s a shame that some countries quaranteen (sp?) animals for awhile for travel abroad.
I probably will be able to get a cat before a dog, because cats are more independent and I can’t be around as often to tend to dogs.
Heaven’s no, Brandi! I don’t cook with it! I just tried sharing it with Bruce because I have a hard time just pouring leftover milk down the drain. Plus, I was kind of curious about the validity of Todd’s mom’s story, and was glad to disprove it, at least so far as Bruce is concerned.
Bruce loves milk rings! He’d probably enjoy them even now, but I know Elliot would just cram them in his mouth and try to swallow them. He’s already found Bruce’s pet mice on two occasions, and that’s really gross!
Yes, let’s hear about Melissa’s rooftop cats.
For a brief time a couple of years ago, I thought going into foreign service. Maybe about a week. Had a diplomat come and talk at one of my classes. Global Studies of Feminism or something like that.
And it sounded really cool to do.
And then I realized I had cats. Yes, I do know that I could find them homes. But I think they’re like my children, so that would be cruel. Especially to my oldest cat, who already lost one owner 10 years ago.
And it’d be hard to get them into another country. So it’s just easier to stay here.
Btw, Dawn. I saw this picture a couple of weeks ago of this woman in Myanmar feeding tiger cubs because their mother was too violent.
As devoted as I am to cats, I’m afraid that would make my transformation into cat lady freak complete. So I’d draw the line there.
*Sigh of Relief*
Heather, we have a friend who can quote director, date, and runtime for just about any picture from that time period. M., btw, has met Nicolas as he was at the bible study she attended. So, intermittently, he drags out films and TV shows like The Incredible Hulk. Of course, I watched the show way back when and the opening sequence when Bixby says, “you wouldn’t like me when I am angry” is deeply ingrained in my brain. I’ve been quoting it now and then for years. Nicolas is trying to get us to watch the pilot to Night Rider next, another show I spent lots of time watching back in the day.
Todd — I actually liked Night Rider. I think it was the talking car because it was the same voice as Hal in SO.
The Incredible Hulk rates up there with Knight Rider. Because it was something I loved as a child, but now can’t stand.
I watched an episode or two from Heather’s DVD, and I didn’t care for it. Even though I idolized the Hulk as a kid. Loved Knight Rider. Now David Hasselhoff gives me the creeps.
And Wonder Woman… Heather also picked that up. I loved Wonder Woman so much I had Wonder Woman underwear. But I discovered very quickly that Wonder Woman stands up much better from my memory as a 4 year old or so than it does as an adult.
I say that as I’m slowly making my way through Season One of MacGuyver. Now that is a show that is still cool. A little dated occasionally, but mostly quite cool. Mac is a bit of a chauvinist in the early period, but once he stops fighting Cold War baddies, he seems to mellow out and get all touchy-feely Californian (though the series was at least later done in Canada).
Anyway, Mac can do the coolest stuff with things just lying around. Cool show!
Actually, Nick and I know each other from back in the day of high school. As odd as it sounds, Todd and he crossed paths, and we all convened at the study.
