42 Dreams of Arizona Bay

Searching for the question to the answer of 42.

Best. Headline. Ever. 42.

Sometimes, the opportunity to write a headline just drops right in your lap.

I wish I could take credit for this headline, but I can’t. I can only credit Heather, who has absorbed enough Douglas Adams to do me proud.

  1. That’s just brilliant! I wonder how many other people got the reference, or does the article actually make the connection itself?

I used to use the SETI@home application, which supposedly uses your home computer resources to examine radio transmissions from space for signs of life. I believe it was based out of Berkeley. All I remember is my transmissions always seemed to come via the Arecebo radio telescope, which I believe is in Puerto Rico.

  2. Too cool. So Heather wrote this? Way to go!! I hope you took her out for dinner or something for this :)

  3. Mel B.

I think the writer of the wire story was not unaware of the coincidence of 42 antennas but played the story straight. So probably a few people got the joke in the paper that day, but not all of them. Certainly no direct reference to Douglas Adams.

I’m sorry that I didn’t just grab a PDF, but inside pages are a lot harder to find, and I would’ve had to wait for the next day. It’s not that important, anyway.

And no dinner, though I think I was pretty proud of Heather for having soaked in some of my nerd-dom, along with her cubicle neighbor, Sarah, who also got the joke because she’s watched my original Hitchhiker’s TV show.
