International Pancake Day

Filed under: Yo-Yos and Uno Decks — Matthew at 11:36 am on Tuesday, February 28, 2006

I know there is at least one brooder whose favorite breakfast food is a heapin’ helpin’ of fruit covered pancakes.

Today would be a good day to go to IHOP, according to Snopes.com.  Between seven AM and two PM on February 28 (today), IHOP will be offering its patrons a free short stack of pancakes in celebration.  Better move your butt over there before two o’clock rolls around.

I’d be there if there were an ihop around here…maybe I’ll make my own pancakes instead :)

oh, and that was Dawn who wrote that…Todd’s big into eating pancakes, but not so much into making them.

I’m with Todd on that one. Eating is so much better than making them.

Now, does anyone know why today is International Pancake Day? What do pancakes have to do with Mardi Gras?

You got me on that one. (Todd this time around). I’m more in a huevos rancheros mood lately however. Hint. Hint.

Largely on your recommendation, I ordered those Huevos Rancheros last time we ate lunch at a Mexican restaurant. I’m sorry, but I thought they were absolutely disgusting. I will never order them again.

By the way, I don’t know the answer to my question and am too tired to Google it, in a futile attempt to look brilliant.

You have sorry taste buds, my friend, or bad local restaurants.

BTW, the local UCC church had a pancake dinner last night, so we did celebrate this deep and profound holiday. The cakes were not at all up to our discriminating taste however. No surprise there.

Other food I’ve gotten at the restaurant has been quite good. It’s authentic Mexican food, cooked by Hispanics and served by Hispanics. The fajitas are terrific. So is the salsa. I could make a meal of salsa and chips.

Well, my huevos rancheros equals if not tops most of what I’ve had at restaurants, and yes, Todd, I get the hint. But I have to get out for groceries first…bacon, tortillas, crushed tomatoes. So maybe I’ll make them tonight IF I can get out first.

Not sure on what pancakes may have to do with Mardi Gras…some floury connection to the paczkis that show up this time of year, perhaps?

I knew I’d read something about pancakes that explained why. This Wikipedia entry is lengthy, but helped me remember that pancakes are made to use up stuff you can’t use in Lent?
Also, there’s apparently a tradition of throwing crepes on a bureau, and leaving them up the entire year. Ick. Anyway, I can’t find any reference to that easily.

But yes, this brooder has a love for Dawn’s chocolate chip and pecan pancakes. Sigh. I want pancakes.

Thanks, Mel. Leaving crepes on a bureau all year sounds pretty disgusting to me, too.
