Escapism, pure and simple

All I want is escape. Here are three new movie trailers I watched on my lunch:

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (this one looks fantastic!)

The Dukes of Hazzard (might be funny; Willie Nelson is an interesting choice for Uncle Jessie)

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (underwhelming as a teaser; the dragon looks pretty cool, though)

  1. Willie Nelson? For some reason, I think the man can pull it off. . .

  2. Nelson is appropriately grizzled, I suppose. Burt Reynolds should be funny as Boss Hogg, too. I loved this show when I was a kid.

  3. So did I. I remember in college, we would schedule our classes around the reruns. Sad isn’t it!

  4. Even as a kid, it struck me as odd that Hazzard county had such a high crime level. That must have been a difficult show to write for. I imagine the writers started recyclying old episodes pretty quickly: city slickers come to rob the bank; the Duke boys get blamed for it; the Duke boys capture the robbers, clear their name, and give the credit to Enos, etc., etc.

  5. Have you noticed all the new movies coming out are mostly re-makes of older movies, re-makes of TV shows, based on comic books or other books or just more on superheroes in general? The Dukes of Hazzard, Herbie the Love Bug, The Pink Panther, Sin City, Superman Returns, Fantastic Four, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Bewitched… I could go on and on. Makes me wonder if Hollywood is running out of ideas.

By the way, I’m not thinking Nicole Kidman is going to make a good Samantha in Bewitched.

  6. You’re right, though I hadn’t noticed before. I don’t think Hollywood is running out of ideas; I think executives are just less willing to take a chance on new ideas. They want the proven money-maker, though it’s hard to see how anyone convinced them that The Dukes of Hazzad woul be such a money-maker. Maybe they’re counting on nostalgia (I’ll see it on DVD; I won’t go to the theater for a comedy). As for Kidman playing Samantha, yeah I don’t envision her in the part. She does have the looks, though. It’s her acting which I think is beyond that role.

  7. I made a comment to a friend of mine about Kidman playing Samantha and he said Catherine Zeta Jones should do it. What??? She looks nothing like Samantha! And he said, yeah but Catherine can do anything. Oh brother.

  8. Well, Jones might be able to handle the part of Serena, but I don’t think she could successfully change herself into a pale-skinned blonde.
