Top Ten Causes of Ear Worm

Feel free to make your own list in the comments section. Anyone care to agree or disagree with my choice for number one cause of ear worm?

10. You’re So Vain (Carly Simon)

9. Squeeze Box (the Who)

8. I am a Rock (Simon & Garfunkel)

7. Happy Jack (the Who)

6. Hey Jude (the Beatles)

5. Yellow Submarine (the Beatles)

4. Nowhere Man (the Beatles)

3. Under the Boardwalk (The Drifters)

2. Come on Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners)

1. I still haven’t found what I’m looking for (U2)

  1. How the HELL did you do that?!?! Who told you that Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” has been playing in my head for the past three days?!?! Your agents are everywhere and my organization is powerless to stop them!! Actually, the only other one that routinely gets in my head here is “Come On Eileen.” For number one, I’m not sure, but U2’s hit isn’t a problem for me (possibly because I kinda like it. Sue me.) I think I’ll have to nominate “The Locomotion” by someone I wish had died as a child.

  2. I’d say more days than not, at some point in the day that U2 song plays over and over in my head for long periods of time. As for “Come on Eileen,” there’s a young lady I work with named Eileen, so every time I think about her or talk to her or she phones me at my desk for something or other, it triggers that song to start playing in my head. I would never mention it to her, considering the subject matter of the song; and besides that, everyone she has ever met has probably brought up the fact that Dexy’s Midnight Runners wrote a hit song about “her” in the eighties.

  3. How the HELL do you do that, Scott? Locomotion was the song that came to mind for me. And as for a Simon and Garfunkel song, Cecelia is the one that always sticks in my head, but I kinda like that one so I don’t mind too much. The Girl from Ipanema also gets stuck in my head, largely because it always seems to be playing in the background when I’m shopping.

  4. “Locomotion” is on one of Brendan’s CDs of kid’s music, and it is an insidious little worm. I think the key to a song being infectious is that it has to have a repetative, almost jingle-like chorus. All of the songs we’ve mentioned fall into that category, I think.

  5. Heh heh heh. None of you have managed to pass your infection on to me. I am immune. (Trying very hard not to think of Come On Eileen.)

I have a lot of songs that get stuck in my head, but they usually tend to be better songs. Ones that come from me listening to them earlier in the day or something.
But the worst time is when your coworkers pass an infection on, often with glee.

  6. Immune, hey? “We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine…” Resist that, if you can.

  7. Okay, I DID have “Yellow Submarine” stuck in my head this morning (before I read your blog and comments) and that is not funny. I am trying to get rid of this song and it seems to be haunting me!

As far as the others, I really like all of them, except for “Yellow Submarine,” “Under the Boardwalk,” and “Come on Eileen.”

Lately, I have had Lynard Skynard stuck in my head, but I like them too!

  8. Lynyrd Skynyrd! Oh yeah. Let me guess the song: “Sweet Home Alabama.”

  9. No, the song would be “Freebird.” Good guess, though!

  10. Heh, heh, heh, Dawn. My agents are most effective. . .
