Pope Benedict Disapproves of Potter Novels

Here’s another quickie for you. Pope Benedict has expressed public disapproval of the Harry Potter novels, the first time a Pope has done so.

He wrote a brief letter to a German author who has written a critical book on Harry and company titled Harry Potter: Good or Evil? (the author concludes that Harry is evil, of course). In the letter, Da Pope says, “It is good that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly.”

His words read like something out of the Middle Ages. “Subtle seductions?” Very Augustinian.

Anyway, I am anxiously awaiting the subtle seductions of the “Half-Blood Prince” this Friday. I don’t think the Pope’s disapproval is going to hurt sales anyway. My wife and I have even booked a babysitter Saturday night so we can go sit in a coffee house and read about Harry for a couple hours.

  1. Sigh…I’m so out of touch. I haven’t even read the last HP, let alone made plans for the new one.

Perhaps “subtle seductions that are barely noticeable” are only noticeable to those looking for something to attack?

At any rate, it’s nice, I suppose, that the new Pope and extremist fundamentalist Protestants who’ve been attacking the books for years have something in common. Something for Catholics and Protestants to come together on, eh?

  2. Yes, it’s nice to see that Fundamentalists of every denomination can still unite around the issue of the evils of fiction.

  3. I sure am going to be able to practice more of that sorcery with the addition of another Harry Potter book. Just wait. I’m going to add it to my collection of Grimoires and other evil books.
